You don't know who Fermin Petit, Jr. is. You don't know that he was
one of my favorite uncles, my mother's fraternal twin, or that he
lived down south in Tulsa, OK. Nor do you know about how the mental
devastation of fighting in Vietnam wrecked his life, drowning his
promising literary mind in alcohol abuse for the rest of his life.

You'll never hear him recite from the Rubiyat, or frown at the reek of
all those cigarettes he smoked, or cry because of the cancer brought
on by too much drinking. All you'll really know is that, on 9-9-08, at
11:44PM, he finally expired from the struggle he's been waging for the
last few years.

Because I just got the news, and all I could do was build a tiny
monument of words to him on a small corner of the Internet. It will
last a little while, and his memory, however distant, will touch a few
more people, then, it too will fade away, as is the way of all things.
But as long as eyes can still read this, someone somewhere may still
know what a loss the world has known tonight...

Rest in peace, Uncle Fermin. You've earned it.

My condolences to you and your family.

(At times like this I wish there were more and better words I could
say.)
