White Wolf Announces New World of Darkness Genre for 2007
Changeling To Be Released Summer 2007

August 12, 2006 - White Wolf is proud to announce the "5th Game" for
World of Darkness will be Changeling! As envisioned by developer
Ethan Skemp, fans can look forward to a complex setting where you
character faces new challenges and dangers not seen before in the World
of Darkness.

When asked to describe this latest addition to the White Wolf's product
line, Ethan said, "Changeling is a game of beauty and cruelty, of
passion and loss, of dreams and madness. You have struggled your way
back through the thorns only to find your life had been stolen from
you. Now you make your way the best you can, attempting to piece
together the fragments of your lost life or to forge a new one, chasing
your ambition through the intrigues of the changeling courts and
freeholds, and always looking over your shoulder lest the Others, the
true Fae, return for you."

I was basically hoping for DA: Fae set in the modern era, but it looks
like the True Fae will be enemy NPCs, while the PCs are humans who've
escaped the home of the Fae (whatever that is). DA: Fae did allow for
actual changeling characters, btw...

I for one think this is a brilliant idea, and very much in keeping with
the nWoD's re-focus on personal horror. Don't get me wrong, I liked
DA: Fae, but there's not much horror for the PCs in that game, IMO.

Yeah, but there wasn't really anything inherently horrific in being a
Fae. You were just acting as per your adopted nature. In the new
Changeling, the implication is that your new nature has been forced
upon you against your will, and you'll be struggling against it to
reclaim who you used to be. Sounds like the best of the struggle
against the Beast in 1st ed. VtM, an aspect of the game that I loved
but that fell by the wayside as the game grew in popularity.

Reason no 1: it's not part of the World of Darkness. it's also pretty
fresh with the charm system and has a much better combat system
compared to their other games (though it's all borrowed liberally from
Nexus/Feng Shui). It's also incredibly difficult to GM, but fun to
play.
